Brief Profile

Dr. Abdul Jaleel CP holds a PhD and a Master degree in Population Studies (MPS) from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. He also earned a Master degree in Social Work (MSW) from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala.

His PhD research examines the social costs associated with the seasonal labor migration of rural women from Maharashtra, with a particular focus on villages in Beed district—a semi-arid region characterised by chronic water scarcity and a six-month lean period each year, marked by severe unemployment and a standstill in agricultural activities. Jaleel’s study investigates the experiences of women from these villages who, alongside their families (husbands and children) migrate to work in sugarcane fields for half of the year. The research analyses how these women navigate life at their destination worksites, balancing multiple roles and identities as women, migrants, labourers, mothers, and wives. His findings underscore the precarious conditions they face, including substandard working and living environments, occupational hazards, compromised reproductive health, and violations of basic rights. Part of his dissertation have been published in leading academic journals.

His broader research interests include the social determinants of nutrition and health, food security, infant and young child feeding practices, and malnutrition.

He currently works in the Division of Public Health Nutrition, contributing to several studies, including the "Diet and Biomarker Survey in India" and "The NECCTAR Trial"—an initiative aimed at improving children's nutritional status through enhanced take-home food programs and behavior change strategies in selected districts across six Indian states.
